CFC113

CFC113, also known as trichlorotrifluoroethane or Freon 113, is a chlorofluorocarbon compound with the chemical formula C2Cl3F3. It is a colorless liquid at room temperature and pressure, and it is known for its chemical inertness, low toxicity, and non-flammability. These properties made it a widely used solvent and cleaning agent, particularly in the electronics industry for degreasing and cleaning printed circuit boards. It was also employed as a refrigerant in some applications and as a component in certain aerosols.

However, like other chlorofluorocarbons, CFC113 is a potent ozone-depleting substance. When released into the atmosphere, it rises to the stratosphere where it is broken down by ultraviolet radiation, releasing chlorine atoms. These chlorine atoms then catalyze the destruction of ozone molecules, which are vital for absorbing harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Due to its significant impact on the ozone layer, the production and use of CFC113 have been phased out under the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, an international treaty designed to protect the stratospheric ozone layer. Its use has largely been replaced by alternative chemicals with lower ozone depletion potential.
