CDmängija is a general term referring to a device designed to play Compact Discs (CDs). These devices emerged in the early 1980s and rapidly became a popular format for music consumption, largely replacing vinyl records and cassette tapes for many. A CD player works by using a laser to read digital information encoded on the surface of the CD. This digital data is then converted into an analog audio signal that can be amplified and outputted through speakers or headphones.

There are various types of CD players. Portable CD players, often referred to as Discman or Walkman (though Walkman was primarily associated with cassette players), allowed users to listen to music on the go. Home CD players, also known as Hi-Fi CD players, were designed for use in stereo systems and offered higher audio fidelity. Car CD players integrated into vehicle sound systems were also very common for many years. More specialized players exist, such as professional CD players used by DJs or in broadcasting, which often feature enhanced durability and specific playback controls.

While the physical CD format has seen a decline in popularity due to the rise of digital downloads and streaming services, CD players remain in use. Many modern home entertainment systems still incorporate CD playback capabilities, and a significant number of people continue to maintain and use their CD collections. The technology behind CD players, though mature, represents a significant step in the evolution of digital audio playback.
