These connectors facilitate the transfer of both AC (alternating current) and DC (direct current) power to an electric car. The CCS standard is characterized by its dual-port design, incorporating both Type 1 (J1772) or Type 2 (IEC 62196) AC pins and additional DC pins for faster charging. Therefore, CCSliittimiä are the physical interfaces that enable this combined charging capability.

There are two primary variations of CCS connectors, often referred to as CCS1 and CCS2. CCS1 is predominantly used in North America and is based on the Type 1 AC connector, while CCS2 is prevalent in Europe and other regions and is based on the Type 2 AC connector. Both types allow for the flexibility of using slower AC charging, commonly found at home or in public destinations, and rapid DC fast charging at dedicated charging stations.
