CCSDS

The Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) is an international body that develops and maintains interoperable standards for space data and communications. Established in 1982, it brings together space agencies and other organizations to promote efficient data handling for spacecraft and ground systems. The organization aims to enable compatibility across missions and regions, supporting shared ground infrastructure and reusing software and interfaces.

CCSDS publishes technical recommendations known as bluebooks that describe protocols, data formats, and services used by spacecraft and ground segments. Key areas include Space Data Link Layer protocols, the Space Packet Protocol for data encapsulation, Telemetry and Telecommand (TM/TC) services, and the File Delivery Protocol (CFDP) for reliable file transfer between spacecraft and ground assets. These standards are designed to facilitate interoperability among international missions and to enable collaboration across agencies.

The CCSDS maintains processes for versioning and conformance and updates standards to reflect advances in technology, such as higher-rate data links, improved onboard processing, and advanced error correction. CCSDS standards have been widely adopted in both current and past missions, and the organization continues to coordinate international input to ensure compatibility with evolving space systems and mission requirements.
