CAPSYSLOG

CAPSYSLOG is a proposed framework for secure, capability-based logging in distributed computer systems. It extends traditional syslog by embedding cryptographic capability tokens in log messages and by enforcing access policies along the logging path, enabling verifiable provenance, tamper resistance, and cross-domain auditing.

Origins and scope: CAPSYSLOG appears in research papers and pilot deployments as an approach to strengthen accountability in multi-tenant and inter-organizational environments. It is not an official standard, and implementations vary by project, vendor, or community.

Architecture and operation: log producers generate messages similar to standard syslog, but each message carries a capability token that encodes authorizations such as permitted destinations and retention rules. A CAPSYSLOG collector verifies digital signatures, applies policy decisions via a central policy engine, and stores or routes logs to tamper-evident storage. Transport typically uses TLS, with optional replay protection and time-stamping.

Interoperability and standards: CAPSYSLOG aims to retain compatibility with existing syslog concepts (timestamps, severities, facilities) while adding cryptographic provenance. It is designed to interoperate with SIEM systems and log-analysis pipelines, though bridging with non-CAP environments may require adapters.

Adoption and considerations: In experimental deployments, CAPSYSLOG can improve trust and cross-domain auditing, at the cost of added complexity and resource use. Key challenges include secure key management, token lifecycle, performance impact, and reliance on accurate time sources and trusted infrastructure.
