These reactors are a type of heavy water reactor, a design that employs ordinary water as a coolant and heavy water as a neutron moderator. The CANDU (CANada Deuterium Uranium) reactor, developed in Canada, is the most well-known example of this type.

The defining characteristic of CANDUtyyppisissä reactors is their ability to use natural uranium as fuel. Unlike many other reactor designs that require enriched uranium, the CANDU design's efficient moderation with heavy water allows it to sustain a nuclear chain reaction using uranium with its natural isotopic abundance.
