Bösendorfer

Bösendorfer is an Austrian piano manufacturer based in Vienna. Founded in 1828 by Ignaz Bösendorfer, the company is known for handcrafted grand pianos that combine a warm, singing tone with a powerful bass. Since 2008 it has been a subsidiary of Yamaha Corporation, though production remains in Vienna.

Historically Bösendorfer earned acclaim at the Austrian court and among Romantic-era composers; its pianos were favored for their rich resonance and unique tonal color. The company produced pianos tailored for concert use and for the recording industry, and the most famous model is the Imperial 290, which adds nine extra keys below the standard 88-key range.

The Imperial 290 features a 97-key keyboard extending the instrument's lower range, enabling a broader bass and coloristic options. Bösendorfer also manufactures other models such as the 225 and various concert grands, combining traditional craftsmanship with distinctive tonal design.

Today Bösendorfer continues to be associated with Viennese craftsmanship and a distinctly warm, noble piano voice used by performers worldwide. The brand remains a symbol of high-end, artisanal piano making and is sought after by concert pianists and recording artists for its expressive potential.
