Buttigieg

Pete Buttigieg, born January 19, 1982, in South Bend, Indiana, is an American politician and former naval officer who serves as the United States Secretary of Transportation. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard College in 2004 and studied at the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, where he completed an MPhil. He later served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve, including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2014 with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit.

Buttigieg began his political career in South Bend, winning the 2011 election to become mayor. He served as mayor from 2012 to 2020, focusing his administration on urban redevelopment, infrastructure improvements, and economic diversification. He led efforts to revitalize downtown and expand public services while addressing budget and public safety priorities.

In 2019, Buttigieg announced his candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination for 2020, becoming the first openly gay major‑party candidate to win delegates. His campaign emphasized climate action, infrastructure investment, governance reform, and expanding opportunities for urban and rural communities.

In February 2021, Buttigieg was confirmed as United States Secretary of Transportation in the Biden administration. He oversees federal policies on highways, rail, aviation, ports, and safety, and has played a leading role in implementing the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and advancing transportation electrification and resilience.
