Burmas

Burmas is not a standard term in contemporary English. In most contexts, people from Burma are referred to as Burmese or Burman, and the country itself is discussed as Burma or Myanmar. The plural form Burmas may appear in older or nonstandard texts as a rough plural of Burma-related things, but it is not part of standard nomenclature today.

Geographically, Burma/Myanmar is a Southeast Asian nation that borders several countries and features a diverse, multiethnic population. The Bamar (Burman) people form the largest ethnic group, while numerous minority communities—such as the Shan, Karen, Rakhine, Kachin, and Chin—live across the country. The population is mixed, with no single ethnic group constituting a majority after accounting for regional variation.

Linguistically, Burmese is the official language and is written in the Burmese script, which derives from the Brahmi family. The country is predominantly Theravada Buddhist, a cultural influence that shapes festivals, art, and daily life, though various Christian, Muslim, Hindu, and traditional communities are also present.

Historically, Burma gained independence from British rule in 1948 and experienced decades of military rule, followed by periods of quasi-democratic transition and ongoing ethnic tensions. In 1989, the military government renamed the country Myanmar and, in some contexts, the English name Burma remains in use by different governments and organizations. The term Burmas is rarely used today and does not designate a specific political entity.
