Burgonyafélék

Burgonyafélék is the Hungarian term for the nightshade family of plants, scientifically known as Solanaceae. This is a large and diverse family of flowering plants, encompassing approximately 98 genera and over 2,700 known species. The family is distributed worldwide, though it is most abundant in the tropics and subtropics.

Many members of the Solanaceae family are of significant economic and cultural importance to humans. The most famous example is the potato (Solanum tuberosum), a staple food crop for much of the world's population. Other well-known edible members include tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum), peppers (Capsicum spp.), and eggplants (Solanum melongena).

Beyond food, the Solanaceae family also includes plants with medicinal and ornamental value. For instance, tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) is a significant agricultural product, though its use is associated with health risks. Several species are cultivated for their attractive flowers, such as petunias (Petunia spp.) and certain ornamental peppers.

However, it is important to note that some plants within the Solanaceae family are highly toxic. For example, belladonna (Atropa belladonna) and datura (Datura stramonium) contain potent alkaloids that can be poisonous if ingested.
