Burgazada

Burgazada is the third-largest of the Princes' Islands (Adalar) in the Sea of Marmara and lies off the coast of Istanbul, Turkey. It is part of Istanbul Province and administered by the Adalar district. The island is known for its pine forests, a tranquil atmosphere, and a concentration of traditional wooden houses along its rocky coastline.

Geography and accessibility: The island is hilly with a sheltered harbor at its core. Burgazada is largely car-free, with visitors and residents moving mainly on foot or by bicycle. Regular ferries connect Burgazada with Istanbul’s onshore terminals, including Kabataş, Bostancı, and Kadıköy, with typical journey times around an hour, making it a popular day-trip destination.

History and culture: The island has a long history of Greek and Turkish settlement. In the 20th century the Greek community declined, and today Burgazada is primarily Turkish in population, while preserving architectural and cultural traces from its past. A notable cultural site is the Sait Faik Abasıyanık Museum, the preserved home of the acclaimed Turkish short-story writer who lived on the island for many years; the site is a major literary landmark for visitors.
