Bureen

Bureen is a small unincorporated community located in the eastern part of Rowan County in the state of North Meridian. The settlement sits at an elevation of 518 meters (1,700 feet) on the southern slope of the Calder Range and is surrounded by mixed pine and oak forests.

The area was first settled in the early 19th century by a group of pioneers who established a homestead along the Bureen River, a tributary of the greater Silver Creek watershed. The community developed a modest agricultural economy focused on dairy cattle and corn production, and a grain mill was built in 1846. A post office operated from 1850 to 1903, after which services were consolidated with the nearby town of Sage.

Today Bureen has an estimated population of fewer than 200 residents. The local economy remains largely rural, with a handful of family farms and a growing number of second‑home owners attracted to the area’s scenic views and outdoor recreation opportunities. The community hosts an annual spring fair that includes a farmers market, craft stalls, and a historical reenactment of a 19th‑century settlement day.

Transportation to Bureen is primarily by Route 68, which connects the town to the county seat of Arborville. Public transportation is limited, but bicycle paths linking Bureen to neighboring communities have been developed as part of an ecotourism initiative launched in 2018.
