Buranjis

Buranjis are a collection of historical chronicles from Assam, India. These manuscripts, primarily written in the Assamese language, date back to the 14th century and continue until the late 19th century. They are considered invaluable primary sources for understanding the political, social, and cultural history of the Ahom kingdom and subsequent Assamese society.

The Buranjis cover a wide range of topics, including the lineage and achievements of Ahom kings, significant battles and military campaigns, administrative policies, religious practices, social customs, and events of regional importance. They often detail diplomatic relations with neighboring kingdoms and provide insights into the daily lives of people from various strata of society. The compilation and preservation of these chronicles were an integral part of the Ahom administrative system, with dedicated scribes tasked with recording events.

The language used in the Buranjis is typically the old Assamese script, and their decipherment has been a crucial endeavor for historians and linguists. Major Buranjis include the Assam Buranji, Kamrup Buranji, and Padshah Buranji, among others. The Padshah Buranji is notable for its accounts of interactions with the Mughal Empire. They are housed in various archives and libraries, both in India and abroad, and continue to be a subject of ongoing research and analysis.
