Bunnplates

Bunnplates are a line of modular dinnerware designed for bun-based meals, introduced by the design firm Bunnware in 2018. The plates combine a shallow outer ring with a central recessed well intended to cradle a bun or bread roll, allowing toppings and sides to be plated around the bun. The concept emerged from restaurants seeking to improve presentation and portion control for burgers, sliders, and breakfast buns.

Design and materials: Bunnplates are available in ceramic, porcelain, and BPA-free melamine variants. Each plate features a non-slip base, a central well measuring roughly 6 to 8 centimeters in diameter, and a shallow outer moat to hold sides or sauces. The plates are stackable for compact storage and are designed to be dishwasher-safe and heat-tolerant to standard service temperatures.

Variants and usage: Primary models include the Classic (standard 22 cm diameter), Mini (16 cm), and Deep (for sauces and gravies). The Deep version provides a higher central cavity for liquids. They are used in cafes and casual eateries to present buns with sandwiches, breakfast plates, or tasting menus, allowing diners to combine elements while keeping the bun elevated.

History and reception: After prototype testing in 2017–2018, Bunnplates gained traction in European and North American markets. Critics note improved portion control and streamlined plating, while others cite higher washing costs and the need for compatible dishware. The concept has influenced other bun-centered serveware and inspired response from culinary designers focused on modular tableware.
