Bundela

Bundela is a Rajput clan historically based in the central Indian region of Bundelkhand, which spans parts of present‑day Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The name derives from the ancient kingdom of Bundelkhand, which was established in the late first millennium CE. The Bundela Rajputs trace their ancestry to the Chandravansi branch of the Paramara dynasty and claim descent from the legendary ruler Yayati.

During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Bundela chieftains exercised significant autonomy under the declining Mughal Empire. The most prominent of these were the rulers of the princely states of Orchha, Tikamgarh, and Jabalpur. Orchestrated territorial expansion under the reign of Raja Udaybhanu Singh of Orchha made the Bundela dynasty a key regional power. During the turbulent period of the Maratha incursions and later the rise of the Nawabs, Bundela rulers adopted a policy of diplomatic neutrality and cultural patronage, contributing to a flourishing tradition of temple architecture, fresco paintings, and courtly literature.

The Bundela clan played a role in the Indian freedom movement, with figures such as Shri Maharaj Chhatrapati Hari Singh, a freedom fighter and political leader in the mid‑twentieth century. In contemporary times, Bundela descendants remain active in politics, art, and business within India and the diaspora. The Bundeli dialect, spoken by many of the Bundela people, is an Eastern Hindi variant characterized by its distinct phonological and lexical features.

The legacy of the Bundela Rajputs is preserved in the historic forts, temples, and cultural festivals of Bundelkhand, and their genealogical records continue to be of interest to historians studying the feudal dynamics of medieval and early modern India.
