Buisdikte

Buisdikte is a term (Dutch: "buis" = tube or pipe; "dikte" = thickness) that denotes the wall thickness of a tube or pipe. It is a fundamental dimensional parameter used in engineering, construction, plumbing and manufacturing to describe the material between the inner and outer surfaces of a cylindrical member.

Buisdikte is commonly expressed in millimetres and related to outer diameter (OD) and inner diameter (ID) by the simple relation t = (OD − ID) / 2. It affects mechanical strength, internal pressure capacity, stiffness, weight and thermal performance. In many applications a corrosion allowance is added to the design buisdikte to account for material loss over time.

Measurement methods include mechanical calipers, micrometers for cut sections, and non-destructive ultrasonic thickness gauges for in-service inspection. Tolerances and nominal values are specified by standards and product families; common reference systems include EN, ISO, DIN and ASME standards, and concepts such as nominal pipe size and pipe schedule in some regions.

Manufacturing processes (seamless, welded, cold-drawn) and material selection (steel, stainless steel, copper, plastics) influence achievable buisdikte ranges and properties. Selection criteria balance required pressure rating, structural loads, corrosion resistance, weight and cost. Proper specification and verification of buisdikte are critical for safety, regulatory compliance and long-term performance of piping systems.
