Budjettivajetta, often translated as budget deficit, refers to a situation where a government's expenditures exceed its revenues over a specific period, typically a fiscal year. This means the government has spent more money than it has collected through taxes, fees, and other sources of income. When a budget deficit occurs, the government must find ways to cover the shortfall.

Governments commonly finance budget deficits by borrowing money. This can be done by issuing government bonds or other debt instruments, which are then purchased by individuals, corporations, or other countries. The accumulated deficits over time lead to an increase in the national debt. Persistent budget deficits can have several economic consequences. They can lead to higher interest rates, as the government competes with private borrowers for available funds. They can also fuel inflation if the deficit is financed by printing more money.

There are various reasons why a budget deficit might arise. Economic downturns can reduce tax revenues as incomes fall and unemployment rises, while simultaneously increasing government spending on social welfare programs. Conversely, governments might intentionally run deficits to stimulate the economy during a recession through increased spending on infrastructure or tax cuts. Military spending, social programs, and interest payments on existing debt are significant components of government expenditure that can contribute to deficits. Managing budget deficits is a key challenge for fiscal policy, with debates often centering on the appropriate levels of taxation and government spending.
