Budenny

Budenny, also known as Budyonnovsk, is a town in Stavropol Krai, Russia. It is located in the northern part of the North Caucasus, approximately 210 kilometers east of Stavropol, the administrative center of the krai. The town is situated on the Kuma River.

The settlement was founded in 1799 as the stanitsa of Surovo-Buynakskaya. It was later renamed Buynaksky, and then Budennovskaya in honor of the Soviet military commander Semyon Budyonny. In 1938, it was granted town status and renamed Budennovsk. The town played a notable role in the Russian Civil War and World War II.

Budenny is an administrative center of the Budyonnovsky District. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture and food processing, with industries such as dairy and vegetable canning. The town also has some light industry.

A significant event in the town's modern history was the Budyonnovsk hospital hostage crisis in 1995, during the First Chechen War, where Chechen militants seized hostages in the local hospital. This event brought international attention to the conflict. The town continues to be a regional center for its surrounding agricultural areas.
