Vairocana, also known as the Cosmic Buddha, is a prominent figure in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. The name Vairocana comes from Sanskrit and is commonly rendered as “the shining one” or “the illuminator,” reflecting a luminous, all-pervading reality.

In many Mahayana sutras, Vairocana is described as the source of all Buddhas and the embodiment of the Dharmakaya, the ultimate nature of reality that pervades all phenomena. He is often depicted as the primordial buddha from whom other buddhas emanate, symbolizing the unity of enlightenment and the emptiness that underlies all existence. In Vajrayana and East Asian esoteric traditions, Vairocana is central to mandalas and ritual practice. In Japanese Shingon Buddhism he is identified with Dainichi Nyorai, the cosmic Buddha who represents the primordial source of enlightenment; he is typically shown at the center of mandalas and surrounded by other buddhas and bodhisattvas.

Iconography of Vairocana varies by tradition but commonly portrays him as a serene, luminous figure—often white or gold—seated on a lotus or cosmic throne. He may hold symbolic implements and is sometimes shown with a dharmachakra (teaching wheel) gesture or other mudras that signify the transmission of doctrine. In Tibetan Buddhism, Vairocana is considered the embodiment of the Dharmakaya and a central figure in the mandalas associated with the Five Buddhas, representing the wisdom that realizes emptiness.

In practice, meditation on Vairocana often serves to symbolize the realization of ultimate reality and the unity of buddha-natures, guiding practitioners toward emptiness, wisdom, and enlightenment.
