Brydain

Brydain is a fictional realm created by American author Lloyd Alexander for his series The Chronicles of Prydain. The world is loosely based on medieval Welsh folklore and myth, drawing elements such as heroic quests, mythic creatures, and a landscape that blends pastoral valleys with mysterious forests and ancient stone monuments. In the narrative, Brydain lies along a great river that serves as a trade artery for its people and is the site of several key battles and festivals that define the culture of the land.

The society of Brydain is depicted as a hierarchical yet communal people. Elders, warriors, and a council of folk serve as the ruling bodies, while ordinary townsfolk live in close-knit villages that often face existential threats from dark sorcery and mutant beasts. A central motif in the series is the tension between the packed, human settlements and the untouched wilderness, which is both revered and feared.

Outside of literature, the name Brydain appears rarely as a geographical place name in the British Isles; some small hamlets or farmsteads in Scotland bear the name, often derived from older Gaelic or Brythonic linguistic roots. While these real-world locations are modest in size and population, they share a cultural 'heritage name' that echoes the mythic resonance of Alexander’s fictional kingdom.
