Brixasteina

Brixasteina is a fictional city-state in the archipelago of Nereis, located on a peninsula along the eastern coast of the Lacuna Sea. As a small sovereign entity, it maintains a distinct administrative structure and serves as a regional hub for trade, crafts, and culture. The population is approximately 22,000, concentrated in the historic core and seafront districts.

Its name derives from Brixic roots: brik meaning stone and steina meaning place, a nod to centuries of quarrying and stonecraft that shaped its economy and skyline.

Geographically, the city-state occupies a limestone peninsula with several sheltered harbors and nearby offshore quarries. The climate is temperate, with dry summers and mild, wet winters that influence traditional construction and harbor activities.

Founded in the 12th century by merchant guilds, Brixasteina evolved as a center for quarrying, masonry, and glass production. It achieved de facto independence during the late medieval era and later joined a regional confederation of city-states that fostered trade and legal uniformity.

Governance combines a constitutional framework with guild-based representation. A nine-member Council of Guilds oversees policy, while a mayor chairs meetings and acts as head of government. The judiciary handles civil, commercial, and maritime disputes with an emphasis on property law.

Its economy centers on stone and glass products, complemented by ship repair, tourism, and maritime services. The port supports international trade through shortsea connections and regional markets.

Architectural styles mix ashlar masonry with expansive glass façades. Key landmarks include the Stone Market, the Glassspire Tower, and the Grand Docks. The annual Stone and Glass Festival showcases crafts, performances, and maritime heritage.

Brixasteina's residents speak Brixic alongside a regional lingua franca; schools and museums preserve craft traditions and maritime knowledge.
