Brinellkovuustesteillä, often referred to as Brinell hardness testing, is a method used to determine the hardness of a material. It is a widely accepted indentation hardness test that measures the resistance of a material to permanent deformation. The test involves impressing a hardened steel or carbide ball of a specific diameter into the surface of the material being tested. The ball is pressed with a known force for a specified dwell time.

After the dwell time, the indenter is removed, leaving an impression on the material's surface. The diameter of this impression is then measured. The Brinell hardness number (HBW) is calculated by dividing the applied load by the surface area of the indentation. The formula used is HBW = 2F / (πD(D - √(D² - d²))), where F is the applied load, D is the diameter of the indenter ball, and d is the diameter of the indentation.

This test is particularly useful for materials that are relatively soft, such as some steels, aluminum alloys, and copper alloys, and for materials with a coarse or non-uniform microstructure. It provides a good average hardness value for such materials. However, it is not suitable for very hard materials, as the indenter ball may deform, or for very thin materials where the indentation might penetrate too deeply. The choice of indenter ball diameter and applied load depends on the material being tested, with standardized tables guiding these parameters to ensure consistent results.
