Brexitövergångsperioden

Brexitövergång refers to the transitional period following the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union. This period began on January 31, 2020, when the UK officially left the EU, and was initially scheduled to end on December 31, 2020. The primary purpose of the transition was to allow time for both the UK and the EU to negotiate and establish the terms of their future relationship. During this time, most EU laws and regulations continued to apply in the UK, and the UK remained part of the single market and customs union.

This allowed businesses and citizens to adapt to the upcoming changes with minimal disruption. Key areas of negotiation included trade, security, data protection, and citizens' rights. The UK government and the European Commission worked to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement that would govern future economic and political ties. The Brexitövergång was a critical phase, designed to provide a stable framework while the complexities of a post-Brexit relationship were resolved. The negotiations were often challenging, with significant debate over issues like the Irish border and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice. The agreement reached at the end of the transition period, the EU–UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement, came into effect on January 1, 2021, marking the end of this transitional phase and the beginning of a new era for UK-EU relations.
