Breidamerkurjokull

Breidamerkurjokull is an outlet glacier of the Vatnajokull ice cap in southeastern Iceland. It is one of the most accessible and visited glaciers in the country, known for its dramatic ice formations and its proximity to the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. The glacier's tongue extends southwards from the main ice cap, reaching down towards the Atlantic Ocean.

The landscape around Breidamerkurjokull is characterized by black volcanic sand plains, known as sandur, which are formed by glacial outwash and volcanic eruptions. These plains are often dotted with icebergs that have calved from the glacier and washed ashore, creating a striking contrast between the dark sand and the luminous ice.

Breidamerkurjokull has been retreating significantly in recent decades, a trend observed in many glaciers worldwide due to climate change. This retreat has led to the formation and expansion of the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, a popular tourist destination where icebergs calve from the glacier and drift out to sea. Boat tours and other activities are offered on the lagoon, allowing visitors to experience the grandeur of the glacier up close.
