Brasilströmmen

Brasilströmmen, also known as the Brazil Current, is a warm ocean current that flows south along the coast of Brazil. It originates in the tropics and carries warm, saline water from the Atlantic Ocean towards the South Atlantic. This current is a significant feature of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean and plays a role in the region's climate and marine ecosystems.

The Brasilströmmen is part of the South Atlantic Gyre, a large system of rotating ocean currents. It flows southward, typically between the coast of Brazil and the open Atlantic Ocean, and is generally characterized by its high temperature and salinity compared to the surrounding waters. As it moves south, it gradually loses some of its heat and can interact with other currents, such as the Malvinas Current (Falkland Current) further offshore.

The confluence of the warm Brasilströmmen and the cold Malvinas Current creates a highly productive mixing zone. This area is known for its rich marine biodiversity and supports significant fisheries. The warm waters of the Brasilströmmen also influence the climate of the Brazilian coast, contributing to its subtropical and tropical weather patterns. Its southward flow can affect sea surface temperatures, which in turn can impact rainfall and atmospheric conditions in the region and potentially beyond.
