Brandmeldpunten

Brandmeldpunten are manually operated call points integrated in a building’s fire alarm system. They allow occupants to alert others and trigger the fire alarm by an intentional action when they detect a fire or other emergency.

Most brandmeldpunten are red, clearly marked, and equipped with either a protective cover over a glass element or a push-button mechanism. Activation typically involves breaking the glass or pressing the button, after which the device sends a signal to the building’s fire alarm control panel. This initiates audible and visual alerts, activates building annunciators, and may notify a monitoring centre or emergency services. In some installations, the alarm can also affect access control, ventilation, or door releases as part of a coordinated safety response.

Placement and accessibility are important. Brandmeldpunten are positioned along escape routes and near exits, at heights accessible to most occupants, and clearly signposted. They should be kept unobstructed and protected from accidental activation or vandalism.

Regulatory and standards context varies by country but euro­pean practice often references EN 54-11 for manual call points within fire detection and alarm systems. National and local building codes define installation requirements, signage, testing, and maintenance intervals. Regular inspection and testing by authorized personnel are required to ensure reliability; damaged or worn units must be repaired or replaced promptly.

Brandmeldpunten are a core component of active fire safety, designed for quick, intentional use to enable rapid alarms and emergency response. They are not substitutes for proper evacuation procedures and should only be used in genuine emergencies.
