Brändioppaat, also known as brandy snuffboxes, are small decorative containers historically used to store snuff—a finely powdered tobacco product inhaled through the nose. These boxes were particularly popular in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries, often serving as both functional items and status symbols among the elite.

The term *brändioppaat* originates from Finnish, where *brändi* means "brandy" and *oppaat* means "boxes." The connection to brandy stems from the practice of pairing snuff-taking with a drink, particularly brandy, which was believed to enhance the experience. Many brändioppaat were intricately designed, often featuring elaborate engravings, miniature portraits, or scenes depicting aristocratic life, reflecting the tastes of their owners.

These boxes were typically made from materials such as silver, gold, or porcelain, with some crafted from exotic woods or ivory. Their compact size—often no larger than a small hand—made them portable, allowing users to carry them during social gatherings or travel.
