A boundary spanner is an individual who facilitates information flow and collaboration across organizational, sectoral, or social boundaries. They operate within inter-organizational networks, cross-functional teams, or communities of practice, helping to connect groups that do not share routines, language, or norms. The boundary spanner’s aim is to reduce fragmentation by translating needs and knowledge so that actors with different perspectives can coordinate effectively.

Core activities include information gathering and dissemination, liaison and mediation, translation of jargon, and interpretation of external demands for internal teams. They broker knowledge, identify opportunities for collaboration, and mobilize resources across boundaries. Boundary spanners may work as formal roles such as liaison officers, project managers, or cross-divisional coordinators, or as informal networkers who navigate relationships and social capital to get things done.

Contexts and effects vary, but boundary spanners are commonly found in multinational firms, public administrations, research institutions, and non-profit collaborations. They support knowledge transfer, strategic alignment, and innovation by bridging gaps between departments, organizations, or professional cultures. Successful boundary spanners typically exhibit credibility, broad networks, interpersonal skills, cultural awareness, and the ability to manage competing priorities and conflicts.
