Botswana, officially the Republic of Botswana, is a landlocked country located in Southern Africa. It is bordered by Namibia to the west and north, Zambia to the northeast, Zimbabwe to the east, and South Africa to the south and southeast. Botswana is the 45th largest country in the world by area, with a population of just over 2.3 million people. The capital and largest city is Gaborone.

The country is known for its vast, arid, and sparsely populated landscape. A significant portion of Botswana is covered by the Kalahari Desert. Despite its arid climate, Botswana is home to a rich diversity of wildlife, with large populations of elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, and numerous bird species. The Okavango Delta, a unique inland delta, is a major tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, supporting a remarkable array of flora and fauna.

Botswana gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1966. Since then, it has transitioned from one of the poorest countries in Africa to a middle-income country. This economic success is largely attributed to the discovery of diamonds shortly after independence, which have been managed responsibly. The country has a stable democracy and a relatively strong economy.

The official languages are English and Setswana. The currency is the Botswana Pula (BWP). Botswana's economy is heavily reliant on diamond mining, but tourism and beef production are also significant sectors. The country faces challenges such as income inequality and the impact of HIV/AIDS, but it has made considerable progress in addressing these issues.
