Borysthenes
Borysthenes (Greek: Βορυσθένης) is the ancient Greek toponym for the Dnieper River, one of Europe’s major waterways. In classical sources, Borysthenes designates the river that runs from the Valdai Hills region through present-day Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine to the Black Sea. The name appears in authors such as Herodotus, Hecataeus, and Strabo, where the river functions as a central geographic feature of the northern Black Sea area.
The Dnieper River originates in the northeastern part of Europe and flows generally southward and westward,
Greek colonists established towns and trading posts along the Borysthenes as part of the broader Greek expansion
Today the river is known as the Dnieper (Ukrainian: Dnipro, Russian: Dnepr). Borysthenes remains a term used
