Boostingmenetelmiä, or boosting methods in English, are a family of machine learning algorithms used for classification and regression tasks. These methods are designed to improve the accuracy of any given learning algorithm by combining multiple weak learners to create a strong learner. The core idea behind boosting is to focus on the instances that are difficult to predict, thereby reducing the bias and variance of the model.

One of the most well-known boosting algorithms is AdaBoost, which stands for Adaptive Boosting. AdaBoost works by iteratively training weak learners, such as decision trees, on the training data. In each iteration, the algorithm assigns higher weights to the misclassified instances, forcing the subsequent weak learners to focus more on these difficult cases. The final prediction is made by combining the predictions of all weak learners, with each learner's contribution weighted by its accuracy.

Another popular boosting method is Gradient Boosting, which builds an ensemble of weak learners in a sequential manner. Unlike AdaBoost, which adjusts the weights of the training instances, Gradient Boosting fits the new learner to the residual errors made by the existing ensemble. This approach allows Gradient Boosting to handle a wide range of loss functions and is particularly effective for regression tasks.

Their ability to improve the performance of weak learners makes them a valuable tool in the machine learning practitioner's toolkit.
