Bohinj

Bohinj is a valley and municipality in the Julian Alps of northern Slovenia, in the Upper Carniola region. It lies largely within Triglav National Park, Slovenia’s only national park, and is known for its alpine scenery, forests, and traditional settlements.

Geography and setting: The Bohinj Valley runs roughly north–south along the Sava Bohinjka river and contains Lake Bohinj, a glacial lake that is the largest natural lake in Slovenia by volume. The lake’s eastern shore is home to Ribčev Laz, while Ukanc sits at the western end. The municipality also includes the settlements of Bohinjska Bistrica and other alpine villages.

Notable features and attractions: Lake Bohinj is a focal point for outdoor activities such as swimming, boating, and hiking. The Savica Waterfall near Ukanc is a popular natural attraction and a source of the upper Sava Bohinjka. The area forms part of Triglav National Park, which protects the surrounding peaks and ecosystems, including Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest summit. The Vogel ski resort on Mount Vogel provides winter sports opportunities and panoramic views of the lake region.

Activities and economy: In summer, visitors explore the lake and surrounding trails by foot or bike, while in winter the region offers skiing and snow-related recreation. Tourism is the main economic activity in Bohinj, supported by agrarian and craft traditions in the valley’s villages.

Transport: The valley is accessible by road via Bohinjska Bistrica and by the Bohinj Railway, which connects Jesenice with Nova Gorica and passes through the valley, linking it with broader transport networks.
