Bodenwellen

Bodenwellen, also known as ground waves, are a type of radio wave that propagates along the surface of the Earth. They are particularly effective at lower frequencies, typically below 3 MHz, and are used for long-distance communication, especially in maritime and aeronautical applications. The curvature of the Earth and the presence of the Earth's surface are key factors in how Bodenwellen propagate.

When a radio wave is emitted from an antenna, a portion of its energy can travel along the Earth's surface. This wave follows the contour of the land, bending around hills and over the horizon. The strength of the Bodenwelle is influenced by the conductivity of the ground. Highly conductive surfaces, such as saltwater, allow Bodenwellen to travel further and with less attenuation than less conductive surfaces like dry soil.

The effectiveness of Bodenwellen decreases significantly at higher frequencies due to increased attenuation. For very long-distance communication at these higher frequencies, skywave propagation, where radio waves are reflected by the ionosphere, becomes more important. However, for shorter to medium distances, especially over water or relatively flat terrain, Bodenwellen remain a reliable method of communication. Their ability to follow the Earth's curvature makes them invaluable for broadcasting and point-to-point communication where a direct line of sight is not possible.
