Bodenverfestigungen, also known as ground improvement or soil stabilization, refers to a range of techniques used to increase the strength, stiffness, or load-bearing capacity of soil. These methods are employed when natural soil conditions are insufficient for the intended engineering project, such as building foundations, roads, or dams. The primary goals of ground improvement are to prevent excessive settlement, enhance shear strength, reduce permeability, or mitigate liquefaction potential.

Common ground improvement techniques include mechanical methods like compaction, which densifies the soil by removing air voids through applied pressure. Dynamic methods, such as dynamic compaction, involve dropping heavy weights from a height to compact the soil. Vibro-compaction uses vibratory probes to densify granular soils. Inclusions and reinforcement techniques involve inserting materials like stone columns, aggregate piers, geogrids, or geotextiles into the soil mass to improve its mechanical properties.

Chemical and physical stabilization methods involve mixing the soil with additives. Lime stabilization reacts with clay soils to improve plasticity and strength. Cement stabilization binds soil particles together, forming a more rigid matrix. Bitumen stabilization uses asphalt binders to improve water resistance and strength. Jet grouting and deep mixing inject cementitious slurries into the ground to create soil-cement columns.

The selection of a specific ground improvement technique depends on various factors, including the type of soil, the required improvement, project constraints, cost, and environmental considerations. Proper investigation and design are crucial to ensure the effectiveness and long-term performance of any ground improvement measure.
