A blødgøringsdispenserer, often translated as a water softener dispenser, is a device integrated into plumbing systems to manage the hardness of water. Its primary function is to introduce a controlled amount of a softening agent into the water supply, thereby reducing the concentration of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. These minerals are responsible for the negative effects of hard water, such as limescale buildup in pipes and appliances, reduced lathering of soaps, and potential damage to plumbing fixtures.

The mechanism typically involves a reservoir containing a softening agent, such as salt or a specialized resin. As water flows through the system, a portion of it is directed into the dispenser. Here, it interacts with the softening agent, either dissolving it to create a brine solution or passing through the resin beads, which exchange their sodium ions for the calcium and magnesium ions in the water. The softened water then rejoins the main water supply.

The amount of softening agent released is usually regulated by a timer or a flow meter to ensure optimal water softening without excessive use of the agent. Maintenance involves periodically refilling the reservoir with the softening agent and cleaning the dispenser to prevent blockages and ensure efficient operation.
