The word is formed from the adjective bläulich, meaning bluish, and transluzent, a variation of translucent used in technical contexts to emphasize partial transparency. In scientific literature, bläulichtransluzent is typically applied to glasses, crystals, and thin films whose optical properties allow light to pass through while imparting a blue hue.

The phenomenon arises when the material contains chromophores or structural features that selectively scatter and absorb visible light. Common examples include certain types of opal glass, dyed quartz, and layered composite films used in architectural glazing. The bluish tint is often produced by trace amounts of iron or silver ions, or by engineered interference patterns in multilayer coatings.
