Bluraylevyissä, often referred to as Blu-ray discs, are a type of optical disc storage medium. They are the successor to the DVD format, offering significantly greater storage capacity and improved video and audio quality. A standard single-layer Blu-ray disc can hold approximately 25 gigabytes of data, while a dual-layer disc can store around 50 gigabytes. This increased capacity allows for high-definition video playback, often in resolutions such as 1080p, and supports advanced audio codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

Blu-ray technology utilizes a blue-violet laser with a shorter wavelength than the red laser used in DVD players. This shorter wavelength enables the laser to focus on smaller pits and lands on the disc surface, thus packing more data into the same physical space. The development of Blu-ray was a collaborative effort by a consortium of consumer electronics and computer companies, with Sony being a prominent player. It emerged as the dominant format in the high-definition optical disc battle against the HD DVD format in the late 2000s.

Beyond movies and television shows, Blu-ray discs are also used for storing video games, particularly for consoles like the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, as well as for PC software distribution. The format's robustness and archival qualities also make it suitable for data backup and long-term storage solutions. While streaming services have gained popularity, Blu-ray discs continue to be a preferred choice for many consumers seeking the highest possible audio-visual fidelity and physical ownership of their media.
