The term is not an official format, but a shorthand for multi-format players and media compatibility.

Typical BlurayDVD components include support for BD-ROM, BD-R/RE and DVD-ROM, DVD±R/RW, and often CD formats. They usually feature HDMI video outputs and built-in video processors capable of upscaling DVDs to high definition. Many players also support common Blu-ray features such as BD-Live online interactivity and Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio, although this depends on the model. Region coding can vary: some devices are region-locked, others region-free through user settings or firmware updates.

Use of BlurayDVD-capable devices allows households to access both new Blu-ray releases and older DVDs with a single player, reducing the need for multiple components. Quality of upscaling and supported audio formats depend on the hardware. Reliability may be affected by disc condition and the player's drive design.
