Bizalomersít

Bizalomersít is a rare and historically significant mineral that belongs to the sulfate class of minerals. It was first identified in the early 20th century and named after its type locality, the Bisazo mine in the Tsumeb district of Namibia, where it was discovered in association with other secondary minerals in oxidized copper deposits. The mineral’s name derives from the combination of "Bisazo," the mine’s name, and "mercury," reflecting its chemical composition, which includes mercury as a key component.

Chemically, bizalomersít is a basic mercury sulfate hydroxide with the formula Hg₃SO₄(OH)₂. It crystallizes in the triclinic system, forming small, tabular crystals that are typically translucent to opaque. The mineral exhibits a pale yellow to white color and has a pale yellow streak, often appearing slightly iridescent due to its thin, plate-like habit. Its luster is adamantine to resinous, and it is relatively soft, with a Mohs hardness of approximately 2.5.

Bizalomersít is found in the oxidized zones of mercury-rich hydrothermal veins, often as a secondary mineral formed through the alteration of primary mercury-bearing minerals like cinnabar. It is most commonly associated with other mercury sulfates such as schuchardite and metacinnabar, as well as secondary copper minerals like brochantite and malachite. Due to its rarity and the toxicity of mercury, bizalomersít is not commonly encountered in collections or studied extensively, though it holds interest for mineralogists and collectors specializing in rare sulfates.

The mineral’s occurrence is limited to a few localities, primarily in Namibia, though similar mercury sulfates have been reported in other regions with mercury deposits, such as Mexico and the United States. Its study contributes to understanding the geochemical processes involved in mercury mineralization and the formation of secondary minerals in oxidized ore environments.
