Biotiiniantagonistien, known in English as biotin antagonists, are compounds that interfere with the action of biotin, also known as vitamin B7. Biotin is a water-soluble vitamin crucial for various metabolic processes, including the synthesis of fatty acids, glucose, and amino acids. It acts as a cofactor for several carboxylase enzymes essential for these pathways. Biotin antagonists work by inhibiting the function or availability of biotin within the body.

There are several known types of biotin antagonists. One prominent example is avidin, a protein found in raw egg whites. Avidin binds very tightly to biotin, forming an insoluble complex that prevents the absorption and utilization of biotin by the body. This strong binding is why consuming large amounts of raw egg whites can lead to biotin deficiency. Another class of antagonists includes certain drugs, such as some anticonvulsants and antibiotics, which can interfere with biotin metabolism or absorption, although this effect is generally less pronounced than that of avidin. Furthermore, some experimental compounds are designed specifically to antagonize biotin's effects for research purposes or potential therapeutic applications, though these are not in widespread clinical use.

The consequences of biotin antagonism can mimic symptoms of biotin deficiency. These may include hair loss, skin rashes, neurological issues like depression and hallucinations, and metabolic disturbances. The severity of these symptoms depends on the potency of the antagonist, the dose, and the duration of exposure. While avidin's effect is well-documented and easily remedied by cooking egg whites (which denatures avidin) or by ensuring adequate biotin intake from other sources, the impact of drug-induced antagonism is usually managed by adjusting medication or supplementing with biotin.
