Bioplastids

Bioplastids is a term that has appeared in some historical and schematic proposals in eukaryote phylogeny to refer to a broad plastid-bearing clade. The concept centers on the idea that many diverse eukaryotic lineages acquired plastids through endosymbiotic events and that these plastid-bearing descendants might form a single, recognizable group. However, bioplastids is not a universally adopted or consistently defined unit in modern taxonomy.

The composition of bioplastids has varied between authors. Some definitions include all plastid-bearing eukaryotes, spanning primary plastid lineages such as the Archaeplastida (green plants, red algae, and glaucophytes) and numerous groups with secondary or tertiary plastids. Other formulations are more restrictive, grouping only certain plastid-bearing lineages or treating the term as a historical umbrella rather than a formal clade. Because plastid histories involve multiple endosymbiotic events and extensive gene transfer, the boundaries of bioplastids are debated and not reflected in a single consensus tree.

In practice, the idea of bioplastids emphasizes the shared evolutionary origin of plastids and the profound impact of endosymbiosis on eukaryote diversity. As molecular data accumulated, many researchers moved toward recognizing several separate supergroups (such as Archaeplastida and various plastid-bearing lineages) rather than a single, unified bioplastid clade. Today, bioplastids remains a historical or didactic concept rather than a widely used taxonomic rank.
