Bionicles

Bionicles is a line of construction toys produced by LEGO, first released in 2001. The line combines buildable action figures with a connected science fantasy universe. The central premise follows Toa, heroic beings who wield elemental powers and defend the island world of Mata Nui from threats led by Makuta. Over its run, the range expanded to include a variety of characters such as Matoran villagers, Turaga elders, and additional antagonists, with new tribes and creatures added in later years.

The figures are built from a mix of standard LEGO bricks and specialized parts that allow extensive articulation and posing. A distinctive feature is the Kanohi masks worn by many characters, each mask granting a specific power, with many sets designed to exchange or customize masks. Sets often included other creatures or vehicles to expand play scenarios and storytelling opportunities.

Bionicles also developed a multimedia storyline that extended beyond the physical toys. The narrative appeared in comics, books, and animated productions, providing background lore, character arcs, and episodic adventures. This transmedia approach helped establish a cohesive fictional world and fostered a dedicated fan community.
