Bionicle

Bionicle is a line of construction toys released by the LEGO Group. It launched in 2001 and ran through 2010, with a later revival in 2015–2016. The line is notable for its integrated multimedia storytelling, which expanded the Bionicle universe across novels, comics, magazines, films, and online content.

The figures combine Technic and System building techniques to create poseable, feature-rich characters. The core concept centers on Toa—heroic beings with elemental powers—who awaken to defend the island of Mata Nui from the evil Makuta. The original lineup included six Toa named Tahu, Kopaka, Lewa, Gali, Pohatu, and Onua, along with supporting characters such as Turaga, as well as antagonists like Bohrok, Rahkshi, and Visorak. Kanohi masks were prominent, each granting a power and a symbolic identity. Over the years the line introduced additional factions, creatures, and mythologies.

The Bionicle story world, referred to as the Bionicle Universe, unfolded across books, comics, magazines, animated shorts, and a web game, emphasizing themes of teamwork, courage, and self-discovery. In 2015–2016 LEGO relaunched Bionicle with a redesigned setting and new characters, beginning a new storyline centered on the isle of Okoto.

The franchise left a lasting legacy for LEGO, demonstrating how narrative elements could be integrated with play—fostering a large, dedicated fan community and influencing later product lines. The original toy line concluded in 2010, with a brief revival later.
