Biomassaenergien refers to energy derived from organic matter, commonly known as biomass. This organic matter originates from plants and animals and can be utilized in various forms to produce heat, electricity, and biofuels. The primary sources of biomass include agricultural residues like straw and corn stalks, forest products such as wood chips and sawdust, dedicated energy crops like switchgrass and willow, and organic waste materials from households and industries.

The process of converting biomass into usable energy typically involves several methods. Combustion is a direct method where biomass is burned to generate heat, which can then be used for heating purposes or to produce steam for electricity generation. Gasification converts biomass into a combustible gas mixture, known as syngas, which can be used in engines or turbines. Anaerobic digestion breaks down organic matter in the absence of oxygen to produce biogas, primarily methane, which can also be used for heat and power. Fermentation is another biological process used to convert biomass, particularly sugars and starches, into liquid biofuels like ethanol.

Biomassaenergien is considered a renewable energy source because the organic matter used can be replenished through natural processes or sustainable cultivation. When biomass is harvested and regrown at a rate equal to or faster than its consumption, it can contribute to a lower net carbon footprint compared to fossil fuels.
