Biokatalüütid, also known as biocatalysts, are substances, typically enzymes or whole cells, that accelerate biochemical reactions. They are nature's own catalysts, highly specific and efficient, playing crucial roles in virtually all biological processes. In industrial applications, biocatalysts offer an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional chemical catalysts.

Enzymes, the most common type of biocatalyst, are protein molecules with intricate three-dimensional structures that allow them to bind to specific substrates and facilitate their transformation. Their specificity ensures that only desired reactions occur, minimizing the production of unwanted byproducts and simplifying downstream purification. Whole cells, such as bacteria or yeast, can also be employed as biocatalysts, leveraging their complete metabolic machinery to carry out complex transformations.

The advantages of using biokatalüütid in chemical synthesis are numerous. They often operate under mild conditions, such as ambient temperature and pressure, and in aqueous solutions, reducing energy consumption and the need for hazardous organic solvents. Despite their benefits, challenges exist. Enzyme stability can be an issue, and their activity might be inhibited by certain reaction conditions or product accumulation. Immobilization techniques are often used to enhance enzyme stability and reusability. Research continues to focus on enzyme engineering and directed evolution to create biocatalysts with improved properties and expanded substrate ranges, further broadening their applicability across various industries.
