Bioingenieurwesen, also known as bioengineering or biomedical engineering, is an interdisciplinary field that applies engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes. It is the application of engineering to the fields of medicine and biology. This field aims to advance health through the convergence of engineering sciences with biological sciences and medicine. Bioengineers work to develop new technologies, devices, and systems that can be used to diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases.

Other areas include medical imaging, bioinformatics, and rehabilitation engineering.

Bioengineers often work in research and development settings, collaborating with physicians, biologists, chemists, and other scientists. They may be involved in the design of artificial organs, prosthetics, diagnostic tools like MRI machines, drug delivery systems, and surgical robots. The goal is to improve human health by creating innovative solutions to biological and medical problems. The field requires a strong foundation in engineering principles, as well as a solid understanding of biological systems and medical applications.
