Biofilttereitä, or biofilters, are devices or systems that use biological processes to remove contaminants from air or water. The core principle involves utilizing microorganisms, such as bacteria, fungi, or algae, to break down or transform pollutants into less harmful substances. This natural degradation process is harnessed in a controlled environment to achieve purification.

In the context of air purification, biofilters typically consist of a porous medium, like compost, soil, or wood chips, that is inoculated with specific microbial communities. As contaminated air passes through this medium, the microorganisms metabolize airborne pollutants, effectively cleaning the air. These systems are often employed in treating odors from wastewater treatment plants, industrial facilities, and agricultural operations.

For water treatment, biofilters serve a similar purpose. They are used in both wastewater and drinking water purification processes. In these applications, the microorganisms are often attached to a stationary media, such as sand or plastic carriers, within a vessel. As water flows through the biofilter, the microbes consume dissolved organic matter, ammonia, nitrates, and other impurities. This biological filtration is a cost-effective and environmentally friendly method for improving water quality, reducing the need for chemical treatments. The effectiveness of a biofilter depends on factors like the type of pollutant, the microbial community, temperature, and moisture levels.
