Biodiesellähteitä refers to the raw materials used in the production of biodiesel. These sources are primarily vegetable oils and animal fats, which can be processed through a chemical reaction called transesterification to yield biodiesel and glycerol.

Common vegetable oil sources include soybean oil, rapeseed oil (canola oil), palm oil, and sunflower oil. The availability and cost of these oils significantly influence the economics of biodiesel production. For instance, in the United States, soybean oil is a dominant feedstock, while in Europe, rapeseed oil is more prevalent. Palm oil, though efficient, raises environmental concerns related to deforestation.

Animal fats, such as tallow and lard, are also used as biodiesellähteitä, particularly in regions with a strong livestock industry. Used cooking oil and waste greases from restaurants and food processing plants represent a valuable source of recycled material for biodiesel production, offering both environmental and economic benefits by diverting waste from landfills.

Algae have the potential to produce significant amounts of oil per unit area and can be grown on non-arable land, minimizing competition with food crops.
