Bioamplification

Bioamplification, also known as biomagnification, is the increasing concentration of a substance, such as a toxic chemical, in organisms at successively higher levels in a food chain. This process occurs when an organism ingests or absorbs a substance at a rate faster than that at which it is lost by catabolism and excretion. As this substance moves up the food chain, predators consume prey that have accumulated the substance, leading to even higher concentrations in their own bodies.

The substances that undergo bioamplification are typically persistent in the environment and resistant to degradation. Examples include certain pesticides like DDT, heavy metals such as mercury and lead, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). These chemicals often enter the environment through industrial processes, agricultural runoff, or waste disposal.

The consequences of bioamplification can be severe. Organisms at the top of the food chain, including humans, can accumulate dangerous levels of these toxins, leading to a range of health problems. These can include reproductive issues, neurological damage, weakened immune systems, and increased cancer risk.
