BioSciences

Biosciences is an umbrella term for disciplines that study living organisms, their structure, function, growth, origin, and evolution, and the interactions of organisms with their environments. It encompasses both fundamental biology and applied sciences, aiming to understand life processes and translate knowledge into benefits for health, agriculture, industry, and the environment.

The biosciences include core life sciences such as biology, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, physiology, and ecology, as well as interdisciplinary fields like molecular biology, developmental biology, neurobiology, and systems biology. Applied branches include biotechnology, bioengineering, pharmacology, toxicology, bioinformatics, synthetic biology, and environmental biotechnology.

Research typically combines laboratory experiments, field studies, and computational analysis. Modern bioscience relies on technologies such as DNA sequencing, imaging, high-throughput screening, omics approaches (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics), and advanced data analysis and modeling. Model organisms and cell culture systems are commonly used to study cellular mechanisms and disease.

Impact and applications include development of vaccines and medicines, diagnostic assays, agricultural crops with improved yields or resilience, industrial enzymes and bioprocesses, and environmental monitoring and remediation.
